Dribbling Drill for Young Players: "Body Part"
This week, Greg Vanney from CATZCoach - AYSO's preferred online coach training source - shares a practice drill great for young players. In this exercise, players dribble in a grid until coach calls out a body part. Then the players stop, and put the named body part on the ball.
This is a great activity to teach players to dribble under control with the ball close to their feet, at a variety of speeds. Greg calls out "first gear" when he wants players to go slowly, and then "second gear," "third gear" when he wants them to speed up.

Defensive "Keep Away" Drill

CATZCoach - AYSO's preferred online coach training source - goes over a defensive "Keep Away" exercise.
Greg's Keep Away exercise involves three defenders against six offensive players. The object of the activity is for the defensive trio to win as many balls as they can. After a minute and a half, the team of three is replaced with three fresh defensive players. The defensive team that wins the most balls wins the activity.
6-v-3 Keep Away is a great way to condition your defenders and teach them ways to stop an attacking offense. It's also a great opportunity for your offense to work on accurate touches and maintaining possession.

Teaching Your Players to Use Both Feet
This week's Coach's Corner features a simple training game for soccer players of all ages - "Red Light."
In a 20x20 grid, 10 or more players line up across from a cone. Each player will dribble at a moderate speed toward the cone, with the coach announcing "1 - 2 - 3, red light!" At "red light" each player must stop the ball with the sole of their foot.
Ask players to switch off dribbling with their right foot, left foot, outside of right, outside of left, inside of both, etc., to ensure both feet are being developed.

In this week's Coach's Corner, AYSO National Coach Instructor John Ouellette teaches the "Neutral Player Scrimmage" exercise to his team. The Neutral Player Scrimmage requires that both teams pass the ball to a player in a neutral jersey prior to taking a shot on goal.
This exercise will help your team's offensive attack and will help get more players involved in scoring opportunities. Instead of one player receiving the ball and attacking by him/herself, the Neutral Player Scrimmage will require players to keep their heads up, look for open players and passing lanes near the goal and incorporate one and two-touch passing.
